When to See an Acid Reflux / GERD Dietitian

"Take a PPI and avoid spicy food."

Silent reflux (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux) is a different beast entirely. You might not have the classic "burning" in your chest. Instead, you have a chronic cough, a constant need to clear your throat, or a "lump" feeling (globus).

Standard GERD advice often fails LPR patients because LPR is driven by an enzyme called pepsin. Pepsin gets stuck in your throat and "wakes up" every time you eat something acidic. As a dietitian, I teach you the specific alkaline protocols needed to deactivate pepsin—something a generic "reflux list" won't tell you.

2. You’ve Been on PPIs for More Than 8 Weeks

Proton Pump Inhibitors (like Omeprazole) were never intended for long-term use. While they are life-saving for healing ulcers, long-term use can lead to:

4. You Have "Overlap" Symptoms

Treating reflux often involves medications that cause constipation. It’s a frustrating cycle.
